THE FIJIS.
The Flirt, from Levuka, brings news that the s.s. City of Melbourne arrived there on the llth. 24 days; out from San Francisco. She brought nine passengers for Fijis, and twentyone for Sydney, including the Caradinis, who gave two concerts at Levuka, and the following passengera for New Zealand, via Sydney:—Mjf and Mrs Bryden, Mr and Mrs T. I Butterworth, Messrs Turner, J. ! Harper, and Matthews. The following are the principal items of Fiji news : The prospects' of the cotton crop are excellent; , »- Mr James Turner, formerly a | member of the Dunedih City Council, died on the 4th. Jilly. . Messrs M'lntosh and Spiers, planters, were inveigled ashore at the Ba River, and hilled by the same tribe that murdered Mr Baker. Three hundred whites have volunteered to join Thakombau in punishing the murderers. The Lovonis have submitted to Thakombau, aind the whole tribe, td the number pf nearly one thousand, have been distributed among the planters for five years' labour. A European, named Walter Gold, ing, and a Tanna native, were murdered on board the ketch Edith, near : Levuka. The Apia men took the boat, and escaped to the hills, but have since been eaptured. The new Government are -working and a, strong Opposition has also been organised. In the Supreme Court, two white * judges and one native judge sentenced fourteen Lovoni chiefs to hard 'labou* for life for high treason; and for causing the death of two Fiji men they were, found guilty of man. slaughter, and again sentenced to imprisonment with hard labour, for life.,, On the petition of 320 of the white» residents at Levuka, a convention has been called to re-arrange the constitution. 1 1
