NELSON PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
Thursday, Mat 18. The Council went at once into Committee on the Estimates, and passed all the votes to the various Road Boards, without alteration, although an unsuccessful effort was made by Mr Macmahon and Mr Tarrant to increase the vote for " Motueka Road Board " bv £SO. The " Public Works on the Southwest Goldfields" were all unaltered with the following exceptions : On the item, " Harbour signal stations, and removal of snags, £500," Mr Wilkie moved that the sum be increased to £750, which was agreed to. On the item, " Streets and local improvements to meet equivalent subscriptions, £150," Mr O' Conor moved that the sum be £350. Mr Luckie moved that the sum be £3OO, which last amendment was agreed to on a division by 11 to 6. The Council then resumed. On the motion of Mr Reid, a Select Committee was appointed to report upon the management of the Nelson Police Force, such Committee to consist of the Provincial Secretary, Messrs Luckie, F. KeHing, o'Conor, Macmahon, Baigent, and the mover ; and that the petition of certain inhabitants of the Buller, with all other petitions relating to police, be referred to the said Committee. The petition of Isaac Chapman was referred to the Petitions Committee. The Provincial Secretary said, in reply to Mr O'Conor, that the Government would consider the subject of reducing the fee for watermen's licenses before the arrival of the next licensing. Mr O'Conor's motion, " That in the opinion of this Council no public money voted for Fire Brigades should be paid, except to meet equivalent subscriptions," was negatived on the voices, and the Council adjourned.
