The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. In the cause of Truth and Justice we strive. TUESDAY, MAY 9, 1871.

The telegraphic items of European intelligence, published on Sunday last, appear in the from of a supplement in our present issue. A list of the persons, whose claims to lie p'aced upon the electoral roll of Wostland North have been objected to by the Registration Officer, appears elsewhere. The Revising Officer -will hold a Court in Westport, on May 24th, for the purpose of revising the list, when those objected to will have an opportunity of appearing and validating their claims. Previously this officer has held his court at Cobden, but owing to the alteration in the electoral districts, and Cobden not being included in the same district as Uuiler, Charleston, and Brighton, it has been necessary to hold a court in this district The change will prove of material service to the electors. The s.s. Fhoobe will call at Nelson on the 10 h instant, to collect the home mails for despatch by the Nevada for San Francisco. The tender of Mr Francis Courtney has be>m accepted for the conveyance of a mail weekly between Westport and Reefton, Inangahua. On and after Satur.lay next a mail will be closed for Reefton at 9.30 a.m. every Saturday, and that from Reefton will be due at Westport every Wednesday at f> p.m. A child named M'Rae while playing on the wharf very narrowly escaped drowning. It appeals that a boy of the name of Putler was playing with the child M'Rae, and, in the course ox their sport, the latter was pushed off the wharf into the stream. A riremaa on board the Charles Edward steamer witnessed the occurrence, and succeeded in rescuing the child which would otherwise have been drowned. The Athenaeum is now open to the public, the repairs having been completed. We understand that it is the intention of the committee to throw the institution open daily. We see by our advertising columns that the right to Grand Stand, bars, &c, during the coming races will be submitted to public competition by Mr John Munro on Saturday next. We rectify an omission in the advertised programme. In the Packers' and Miners' Purse, the words " owners up" were omitted in our last issue. The Westport French Relief Fund Committee forwarded CI 22 to Melbourne yesterday to Monsieur T)cnis, treasurer of the Victoria Society. We notice among the items of Australian' news that considerable quantities of wheat are being shipped from Adelaide to France in aid of the sufferers by the war. A man, by name Charles Wetherall, and only just arrived from Napier, set fire to

the Rutland Stockade, at Waugauui, a few days ago. Ho said ho had no particular reason for se'ting the building on fire. Ho gave himself up to the police, was charged before the Resident Magistrate with the offence and committed for trial, A number of witnesses in the caso of Drennan v. Scanlan, arising out of disputo in connection with the Dublin City claim, proceeded in the steamer Charles Edward to Hokitika to attend at the Supreme Court. An old Charleston resident, Mr William Hunter, left Westport by the steamer Charles Edward, en route for the old country. A largo number of friends, fellow miners in that locality, accompanied him from Charleston and wished him bon voyage. Mr Hunter is deservedly respected in the district he has left as an enterprising miner and estimable citizen. The two shares held by him in the lease at Darkie's Terrace have been purchased by a brother and Mr Parker, of the firm of Messrs Parker and Garsides. Tn consequence of the vote of Wednesday evening, Mr Donne has resigned his seat in the Executive as Goldfields' Representative.
