POPULATION OF NELSON.
"We take the following from the Examiner: —The result of all the returns obtained by the late census, gives the Province of Nelson a population of 22,896 souls, being 1,418 less than when the census was taken at the end of 1867. Dividing the Province between the Blind Bayer settled districts and the West Coast or gold-fields districts, the actual diminution has taken place in the latter, which exhibits a of 1,931, while in the settled districts there has been an increase of 513 souls. This is so far satisfactory, as showing that the falling off which has taken place in the town population has not, as was feared, extended to the country. We give below the number of persons in each electoral district, with the population furnished in the census of 1867, but it is necessary to remark, that the boundaries of the Suburbs of Nelson are not the same now as on the former occasion, Waimea East having been taken from Waimea, and added to the Suburbs :
