THE ROAD STEAMER.
The "Lyttelton Times," of the 10th March, has the following :—The Government are losing no time in preparing matters for putting the Thomson's road steamer into active service. Immediately after delivery of the steamer had been taken, a conference was held between the Executive, Mr. Gillies', and other gentlemen having practical ac. quaintance with traction engines, the result of which was an order to Mr. John Anderson for the construction of four trucks, each to carry from three and a half to four tons weight. These are now in hand at the Canterbury Foundry, and will probably be completed in about five weeks, when, together with the engine, they will be sent into the Malvern Hills district. Previous to this being done some one of practical knowledge will examine the read to see that nothing is likely to interfere with the progress of the engine. The Government are anxious to get the engine to work as early as possible, for they have already had offers of grain for conveyance, whilst, as an instance of the value placed upon the engine, we may also state that offers have been made to rent it. The Government, however, prefer to give it a fair trial on their own account, as by that means the merits and demerits of the engine will be better arrived at. We understand that the driver of the engine, who came with it from Dunedin, has expressed himself willing to engage with the Government ; and seeing that he is thoroughly acquainted with his duties, and has a very good character from Mr. Gillies, the former owner of the engine, he will most probably have an offer of employment made to him. The trucks being made by Mr. Anderson are, we should say, of the ordinary character, and are to be without india-rnbber tires to the wheels."
