WAIMEA RACES. STORM BIRD LEFT FOR INVERCARGILL. FRENCH SEIZURE OF MERCHANTMEN IN THE PACIFIC. (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (FHOM OVU OWN COBRESPONDENT.) Nelson, Thursday. The following is the result of the racing at Waimea : Great Waimea Handicap—Rustic 1; Butcher Boy, 2. Wakefield Handicap—Sailor, 1 ; Butcher Boy, 2 ; Rustic, 3. The racing on the whole was good. Djnedin, Feb. 27. The Storm Bird sailed from yesterday morning for the Governor. He will come on from Southland to Dunedin overland. A large percentage of deaths occurred among the birds shipped by the Warrior Queen, but nearly 600 of all sorts were lat:ded in splendid condition. The greatest mortality occurred among the grouse and robins. The tenders have been opened for the construction of the Southern Trunk railway. Chaplin's is the lowest, and was nnder £SOOO a mile. The hearing of the " Times " libel case proceeds slowly. Auckland (Via Thames), February 25. The Amelia has arrived from Tahiti, and reports the capture of three merchant vessels—a barque, brig, and schooner -by the French steamer Gucheu, between Valparaiso and Tahiti. The cargoes consisted of grain and merchandise. Via Tattranga, Feb. 28. A great meeting has just taken place at Ohinemuri for the purpose of stopping the carrying of the mails between the Thames and Tauranga. rlunia, the King's delegate, addressed the meeting at some length. The chief Te Hira is hesitating. There is great excitement. The mail passed through yesterday. Heavy floods have impeded the mailman, who, in crossing a river, only saved himself by seizing hold of his horse's tail.
