COMMERCIAL.

"We are indebted to the courtesy of the Collector of Customs for the following particulars in respect to the Customs and other returns for the year ended December 31, 1870: HEVEXUE. The Custom Ilevenue collected during the past year from all sources amounted to .£23,913 6s lod, -which was received as follows —Customs dutiea, £20,121 17s 6d ; gold day, .£84.52 8s 8d ; the balance being made up by fees, warehouse duty, &c. This amount is somewhat smaller than that for the year 1869, caused by a very considerable falling off during the first six months of the past year. The last two quarters have equalled, if not exceeded, that of the corresponding period of 1869. The number of vessels entered inwards during the past year was 337, of a registered tonnage of 27,609 tons, and those clearing outwards 339, of 27,651 tons register, the greater part of which were coastwise, only a limited number from or to ports beyond seas. IMPOSTS. The value of imports for the year amounted to .£66,562, nearly the whole of which were from Melbourne. The value of goods arriving coastwise during the same period there are no means of accurately ascertaining, but an estimate setting them down at. treble the value of the direct imports would not be an excessive valuation. F.XPOBTS. The exports, excepting gold, of which there were 67,f>190zs shipped, consisted of sheepskins, hides, a email quantity of prepared fl*x, and a few returned packages of merely nominal amount, in all about XIOOO or £I2OO.
