Left there at 7 a.m. on Friday, encountering a very heavy head sea, and arrived off Westpoit at 5.31) a.m. on Saturday, crossing toe bar at noon. On Friday spoke the ketch liedolitfe, of Dunedin, oil Rock's Point. The master was ill, and requested to be taken on board, but owing to the heavy sea running could not lower a boat, and the ketch steered away to the northward. There was only one man on board the ketch beside the master and two boys, neither of whom could steer. The s.s. Omeo arrived at Melbourne from New Zealand on the 2nd inst.

The Kate Conley left Melbourne for Greymouth on Feb. 2nd.

The E.M.S. Rangoon left Melbourne for Ga'le on the 2nd instant. She conveyed 97,4790z. 13dwt. 9gr. of gold. Tho Alhanibra arrived off Hokitika early on Saturday. She was tendered at the Grey for mails and passengers on Sunday morning, and left for Nelson shortly after. The s.s. Gothenburg is the next vessel Melbourne, via the Bluff. Sho is not due, however, until about the 17th inst. We learn that the John Penn, which for a considerable time was running between Nelson and the West Coast, has been ptm-iiuscti by the French Government for the New Caledonian trade.

A report has reached Sydney from Honolulu that the United States war steamer, which had been eruising among the South Sea Islands, had been wrecked on a desert island. Belief had been sent from Honolulu.

We notice from a report in a London paper that the P. and O. Steam Navigation Company has decided in the meantime not to run their steamers through the Suez Canal. "The directors are of opinion that it could only be substituted for the Egyptian railway at a sacrifice of time ; and they feel that until the Canal may be in such a condition as to make the safe transit of the Company's large steamers from end to end in from twenty to twenty-four hours, a matter to be relied upon, they are not in a position to apply to her Majesty's Government for permission to adopt it as the mail route."
