The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. In the cause of Truth and Justice we strive. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1871.
It was briefly announced in our last issue that (he proprietorship of this journal had changed hands. The change, though one with which the public must necessarily be made acquainted in connection with the business arrangemonts of the paper, is not, in other respects, calculated to interfere with the general tone adopted by this journal. It is impossible for any orgra of public opinion to please nil manner of men and all shades of t bought: the utmost that we can hope is, by a fair and independent exposition of the various questions affecting the public iuterest } to gain the support of those whose countenance is worth having. It will be the i uture aim of the conductors of this paper to jealously avoid any thing that may tend to foster a party or sectarian spirit ; and, although in adopting such a course the good-will of a few may be alienated, the adage quot homines lot sentential holding good here as elsewhere, we shall fearlessly pursue a course which, in the long run, cannot fail to secure the approbation of all who would sink private and individual interest in order to secure the largest benefit to the largest number. We shall endeavor, in the future as in the past, to keep our readers au courant with all events of interest both within and without the colony at the earliest opportunity, and the task shortly bids fair to be far from alight one, in view of the great telegraph extensions going forward in the Australian Continent and the completion of Indian cables, placing Australia in a position to obtain European intelligence of something less than a fort-
uight old. The permanent location of a large and increasing population in the Upper Buller and lnangah.ua Valleys will render necessary some provision for the circulation of the paper in those districts, and we hope, very shortly, to have effected satisfactory arrangements iu this respect. Inshort,no effort shall be spared, either as a medium of information or advertising to increase the value of this journal. It will be our pleasure, as it is our duty, to foster and encourage any project or legislative measure that may have, as an object, the bettering of the condition of the goldfields, nor shall we hesitate to expose and denounce what may tend to restrict their productiveness or to impede the progress of the people.
