[PER GREVILLE's TELEGRAM COMPANY, RECTER'S AGENTS.] (From the West Coast limes') CiiRisTCHURCtr, Jan. 10. Cedenowas brought up at the Police Court this morning, aud remanded till to-morrow. The inquest on the body of Margaret Buke takes place at the Hospital at two o'clock this afternoon. Mary Glynn, the surviving girl, is progressing favorably. A lartre crowd in the vicinity of the Police Court hooted Cedeno on being re-conveyed in a cab to the Police Depot. Mr Cracroft Wilson retires from the contest for Coleridge. DuNEDiy, Jan. 10. There are five candidates seeking to represent the city in the General Assembly. The election of Messrs Macassey and Reynolds is considered certain'. The Hon. Dillon Bell has been requested to offer himself for election to the Port Chalmers constituency. Auckland, Jan. 9. Via the Thames, late telegrams from Alexandra have been received. They stated that the forces of Tapihana and Whet ore have joined, are near Kapu, and have sent a letter to Colonel Lyons to this effect:—"You are now on Tapu ground. Go to Whangawheri. This is the second wanting sent. The road is now closed. The messenger is Dot to return." Another message says that Tapihana statts the King will not recognise anv other boundary than Mangawheri, and that ho did not recognise the confiscation.
Colonel Lyons has been reinforced. The settlers' families are in the re doubt.
Orakau is gnrrisoned. Mr M'Lean arrived in the 5.3. Phoebe to-day. The Prince leaves on the 14th. He visits Kawau to-morrow. bailed.—Countess of Kin tore, for London, with a cago valued at £7L,000. The gola exported is 16,000 ozs. Thames, Jan. 9, Via Taaranga. The " Thames Advertiser." through Orevi.le and Company, congratulates its southern contemporaries upon the opening of daily mail communication overland betw en the Thames and Tauranga. thus enabling them to receive telegrams from all ports, and form the connecting link with Auckland.
The yield of gold for the month of Dei-ember was 13,086 ozs., from 29,991 tons crushed. His Koyal Highness the Duke is to visit the Thames on Wednesday next, and will probably take leave of Auckland two days afterwards. The amount of published dividends naid during the month of december is £ 10,098 divided among twelve companies. This independent of the large number of dividend-paying claims worked under miners' lights, of which no record is kept. The newly appointed Catholic Bishop arrived here yesterday, and was presented with a congratulatory adoress by his church. Trie rumors from Alexandra are alarming, and fifty of the best riflemen amongst the Volunteers have offered their services to the Government, for active duty. The latest telegrams just received from Alexandra, dated Friday, 9 p.m , intimate that the panic is subsiding, and that all is quiet in Wa'kato.
The Government store at Mercer has been burned, and £22 worth of wool, flax:, &c , stored, were destroyed. A man named Dunn, living here, has been committed for trial on several distinct charges of robbery and burglary. A miner named George was seriously injured this moruiug by a fall of about sixty tons of earth, while working in a drive. He is scarcely expected to survive the injuries received. Napier, Jan. 9. The s.s Star of the was successfully launched early this morning; The s.s. Kangatira towed her to the port, and she is now entering the Iron Fot. Specimens of Kaimanawa gold have been received by Mr Tiifey, from the prospectors, but there is no information of importance.
