THE SHIPPING OF THE WORLD

In'avolume Of reference,:just published : by the ■ ■'"' Bureau Yeritas," we find the following'' account iof the shipping of the world, which shows equally with the official figures the preponderating maritime position which England occupies : ~•:•:- I - .SAILING VESSELS. j 'Vessels ' \ ' , Tonnage. Total ... 4132 ... 2,793/132 It will be seen that while, according to these figures the maritime tonnage, of English sailing ships is 6.993,153 out of 16,042,498, or very nearly half the total amount, in the list,-the marilime tonnage of English steainersis 1,657,7(57 out of 2,793,432, or more than half the amount in the list. It is evident too, that the estimate of American tonnage includes a, great many river craft only, America having veryfew ocean steamers, so that the real preponderance of England in the ocean trade of the world is probably greater than what appears here. The Statistical Committee of Lloyd's have just published their annual analysis of wrecks and casualties' reported, in Lloyd's List: 'The analysis is for the year 1869, and contains a comparison in detail with the results of the three previous years. The excellence of the publication can hardly be exaggerated, and we hope to go /fully intp some of the results which 'are" brought -out. Meanwhile we may notice that 1869, as compared with the average, was a light year of casualties. The average, for the last ten years, has been 3,343 per annum, but the' number in 1869 was only 2,9B6—the lowest.but one of ten years, the nextilowest having been the previous- year, when the number was 2,801. 'On the other hand, the losses of steamers have been greater than the average, of the* I three preceding years; u though a the losses of: sailing ships'have been which perhaps only proves the great increase of the steani I ■ marine,; I but certainly deserves to be noted.
