The result of the Melbourne Cup was : Nimblefoot, 1 ; Lapdog, 2 ; Valentine, 3. It was a. magnificent race, won by a short head only. Time, three minutes thirty-seven seconds. Croydon finished foUrth, and Flying, Dutchman, Tim Whiffler and Glencoe, in the order named. Mr Craig, the owner of Nimblefoot, who died shortly before the race, dreamt that the rider of the winner of the Melbourne Cup would wear mourning on his arm. Day, the rider of Nimblefoot, did so, being in mourning for Mr Craig liimself. The s.s. Baugiioto was to have left Melbourne for New Zealand on the 23rd. The s.s. Omeo broke her screw blade in going up the Tarra, and was docked to undergo repairs.
