WEST COAST SCHOOLS.

The .Inspector of Schools, Mr Hodgson ha 3 returned to Nelson by the John Penn, after a visit to the Charleston and Grey districts. On the 16th inst. Mr Hodgson inspected the two subsidised schools at Charleston, conducted by Messrs Moore and Mitchell, both of which he found fairly attended and fairly conducted. The St. Kilda school was inspected on the 18th, but very few children were present. The school at Cobden, taught by Mr Ray, was examined on the 21st, and the Inspector expressed himself as being highly gratified with the progress that had been made throughout the school during the past year. The Inspector also visited Briurnerton on the 22nd, where a private school, mustering 33 scholars, is being supported by the contributions of the inhabitants, who have built a commodious school-room at their own expense. The Inspector had an interview with a deputation of the inhabitants, and undertook to represent their case to the Central Board, who, he- had no doubt, would at once grant a salary of £l5O for a master, Brunnerton being within the limits of the Educational District of Cobden. An application for a contribution for a school-house .at Napoleon's, where a small private school is supported by the neighborhood, is also likely to be acceded to.
