EXTENSION OF TAILINGS CLAIMS.

The following is the petition at present being signed on the Terraces—" not so much," says a wag, " that we expect to get granted the reasonable request therein embodied, as to obtain moie evidence against his Honor on the day of reckoning :"—" To His Honor the Superintendent,—We the undersigned miners at present engaged in washing the tailings and refuse coming from the tunnels and the groundsluicing claims down the creeks near the Ballarat, Caledonian, German, Giles, and other terraces in the district of Westport, humbly desire your Honor to cause to be gazetted an extension of the size of claims for the above purpose of tailing-washing. The by-laws at present in operation only allow each man to hold the extent of sixty feet long by thirty feet broad, which, in your petitioners! opinion, is too small, and is the cause of much useless litigation and vexatious annoyance, to the loss of your petitioners and to the community at large. This our condition, in the humble opinion of your petitioners, would be considerably ameliorated by extending the size of claims from sixty feet to one hundred and twenty feet long, by the full width of the creek. Therefore, we hope your Honor will cause this much required alteration in the size of tailing claims to be made, and your petitioners will ever pray."
