AN EXPLANATION.
(To the Editor of the Westport Times.) Sin, —Some three weeks since private business necessitated my leaving Westport for Nelson, and as I suppose it is in some measure a certainty that a man cannot long reside in any town in these colonies without making some enemies, and as I presume that I am no exception to the rule, it has come to my knowledge that it has been circulated by some such enemy of mine that I, Richard Nicholls, left Westport in a hurry with the intention of putting some of its tradespeople "in the hole." I beg to publicly state that to my knowledge on my leaving Westport I was not £lO in debt, which has since all been paid; and if any person has still anything on their books against me, on their rendering me a correct account to this address it shall at once be paid. Thanking you to give this a place in your next circulation—l am, Ac, R.ICHABD NiCHOLLS. Nelson, Nov. 1.
