(To the Editor of tlie Charleston Herald.) (Per favor of the Westport Times.) Sib, —I have to request you will allow me the opportunity of setting myself right with the Electors of Charleston by explaining an inaccuracy in your report of my answer to Mr Mirfin's question of " "Would I have tracks cut at given distances from each other into the bush for the purpose of prospecting ?" Tou report me to have said that I did not think it would be wise to propose such an expenditure. I believe I said those words, but the truth half-told," &c, &c. My hearers will recollect that I added, after those words, that I thought it was necessary to open up the country by tracks, and would endeavour to have it done, but we should not have a very large amount of money to spend on such works, and it would, therefore, be necessery, in cutting tracks, to be careful to cut them in such places as would be of real service in developing the auriferous resources of the West Coast, and not just cut them at given distances, irrespective of the character of the country. There was at the same time some remark made by Mr Home about " water, water " being the thing they wanted. My hearers who read this will recollect I said we could only do our best to spend the money voted by the Council for such purposes in such a manner as would meet the wishes of the people, and be of permanent benefit to the West Coast, and it Would be my constant aim so to do.— I am, Sir, yours &c, War. Gibbs. Westport, Oct. 28.
