MR. GIBBS'S CANDIDATURE.

(To the Editor of the Westport Times.) Sir, Tour contemporary the Charleston Herald, in his article of yesterday, has made such a violent attack upon me and my friends, both here and in Nelson, that, in justice to them and myself, I find it necessary to comment on such gross misstatements. I find no fault with his laudation of his favored candidate, Mr Akersten, on the subject of his popularity with the burgesses of Nelson and. the number of influential committees at work to secure his return to power, although I was not aware that he had ever been in a position of power —at any rate in this Province. The comments" I would make, refer to the accusation of my being mixed up with some " sickening business," some " slanderous canard," published by my friends, of which I can assure your readersl knownothing, and which, so far as I can guess, must exist only in the fertile and hazy

brain of the writer. But what I most wish to impress upon your readers is my most emphatic denial of any connection with Mr Curtis; and the nonsense about rumor speaking of my acting with a view to further his election, and obtain an appointment, is only on a par with the rest of the article, and grossly incorrect. My actions for some time past, have been, as every one knows, in direct opposition to him. My wish—l may say, with honest pride, my ambition—is to he chosen by my fellow electors as their Superintendent, and, if I am so chosen, I will do my best, without any consideration of self, to further their interests ; but I have no wish to gain that position by injuring the character of my opponents.—l am, &c, ¥ll. Gibbs. Westport, Oct. 28, 18G9.
