DEFEAT AND EETREAT OE TE KOOTI. CAPTAIN ST. GEOEGE KILLED. THE NOMINA'![ON OF A SUPERINTENDENT. (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (feoh ottr own correspondent.) "Wellington, Thursday. The following telegram was received by the Government late last night:— Napier, Wednesday, 9.55 p.m. Despatches have just been received from Taupo. Operations had been delayed by bad weather, but on the morning of the lth our forces engaged Te Kooti at Iwitauroa, and defeated him with heavy loss. Both Europeans and Natives stormed his position gallantly. The loss of the enemy was thirtyfive killed, and some of them were men of note. On our side Captain St. George and two Wanganui Natives were killed, and two were wounded. Te Kooti had bolted. This is from a short account which has been sent in. Eull particulars have not yet come to hand. Nelson, Friday. Mr Curtis, Mr Akersten, Mr Gibbs, and Mr Horn were yesterday nominated for the Superintendency. The show of hands was in favor of Mr Curtis.
