A Sydney correspondent thus speaks of the American man-of-war, which has since visited New Zealand : The American war-ship Kearsige, which sent the Alabama to the bottom, is now in port refitting, and is an object of much curiosity. Her appearance is neither formidable nor smart, but she carries two very heavy smooth-bore guns amidships, on swivels, each carrying a ball lfiSlbs. Her other guns, nine in number, only one of them rifled, are of small calibre. She is daily visited by crowds of people. When we were oa board, one of the officials addressing us, said, " I s'pose you're aware, sir, this is the craft that sank the Alabama ? And this is the young fellow, sir, that sent her down," pointing to one of tho big guns. And then he laid down the plan, and told us how it all happened and many things that did not happen. The rifles used are burnshed like mirrors, so much so as to have suggested a revnaik by one of us as to the difficulty of taking aim in sunny weather; but we were hastily assured they were the very kind of weapons used in " our rebellion," in which they did much execution. The crew iire full of swagger and vanity, much oi It evidently being put on for the occasion. The Lie/or, a humorous paper published in Sydney, among other things represents a Yankee saying to an Englishman—" I guess the great victory of the Kearsage over the Alabama will be remembered when your Lord Nelson and Trafalgar are forgotten." To which the Englishman replies—" Yes, but not till then."
