On Friday last, in the House of Representatives, the Privilege Committee reported upon the letter received by Major Brown from Mr Fox calling upon Major Brown either to vacate his seat in the House, or to resign his command in the Militia. The report affirmed that the letter complained of was not a breach of the privileges of the House. Mr M'Lean's amended resolutions were reported to the House. These were substantially adopted. The clause proposing the introduction of Ghoorka troops was not passed. Power to be given to the Commissioners, to be appointed under the re-

solutions, to expend £70,000 beyond ' the expenditure estimated as being required for the purposes intended. The question of the employment of Imperial troops was strongly opposed by Mr Stafford, Mr Hall, and other members of the House. Upon a division, the Ministers carried their resolution by only a narrow majority of 3. Numbers—For the resolution, 32 ; against it, 29. The Opposition wished to know who the Government contemplated appointing as Commissioners. The Government replied that they were not in a position to give the names of the Commissioners, inasmuch as that question had not yet been decided. Several members of the House have left Wellington. The Session is not expected to last much longer. A considerable portion of the departmental expenditure as proposed by the Estimates has been passed. Specimens of gold in quartz, and from alluvial workings, continue to be brought in from the various districts. That from the Peninsula looks best. A prospecting company has applied to the Grovernment to proclaim AVaipara a goldfield, consequent upon the supposed discovery of payablo gold. Intercargill, Friday. The discovery of rich quartz reefs is reported from Stewart's Island. P'trxEDlK, Friday. Rich new ground has been discovered at the Dunstan. Napier, Thursday. It is rumored that gold has been discovered at Porangahau, and on Mr Donald M'Lean's run. Hokitika, Friday. The funeral of the late Sergeant Wilson took place at 3 p.m. to-day. Over 800 persons attended, consisting of the Odd-Fellows, Volunteers, Fire Brigade, Police, and the public. Most of the vessels in port were towed to sea to-dav.
