REDUCTION OF GOLD DUTY.
In the House of Representatives last week, Mr Haughton asked the honorable gentleman at the head of the Government, Whether it is intended to bring in a Bill this session to amend the Gold Duty Act? Mr. A T ogel said that one or tsvo Bills had been drafted in reference to the reduction of the gold duty at the Thames, but it had been brought under the notice of the Government that for some time the revenue arising from the Thames was absolutely mortgaged. It had also came under the consideration of the Government whether the Provincial authorities could afford to remit the amount of revenue which would be lost in case such a Bill were passed, lie thought he might say, before the Government came to any conclusion, that thev would require an expression of opinion from the Provincial authorities, in order to be satisfied that the Thames goldfield could dispense with the amount of revenue which would be lost, and which the Province now expended in the district where it was raised. He could not say, therefore, that the Government intended to reduce such a Bill.
