THE LICENSING SYSTEM.
(To the Editor of the We-ilport Times.) Sir, —On reading Dr Giles's annual report I was gratified to find he had so much confidence in the future stability and prosperity of the Builer district. I felt disappointed, however, at his silence on the social and moral condition of "Westport. It is time some alteration was made in the licensing system as regards public-houses and dancing saloons. The present system is most unfair in its operation. Little or no regard is paid to the character of the parties licensed. Houses of the worst kiud are licensed as readily as the most respectable hotels. Dancing saloons are allowed to be kept open all night every alternate week, and the scenes enacted in them are not the best calculated to advance the morals of the place. Half-naked women are allowed to dance at them with impunity.
Such things would not be tclerated in any other British settlement. I trust some abler pen than mine will take the matter up, for it is high time there was a radical change. Apologizing for trespassing on your valuable space, — I am yours, &c. Paterfamilias.
