COMMERCIAL.
During the week Ave have to record a steady trade with the various diggings, and prices well maintained. The arrival of the Mary, from Melbourne, has replenished our rather scanty stocks. Hart's Adelaide flour is now selling at from £lB to £lB 10s ; Provincial at £l6 to £lB. Oats are scarce and worth 4s 6d for good samples. Melbourne cliaff, £l7 10s ; Provincial, £ls. Bran may now bo quoted at £lO for good samples. Potatoes are in full supply at £6. Butter is scarce, and for prime samples Is 3d and Is 4d are freely obtained ; inferior quality is unsaleable. Our stocks of hams and bacon are light, and, owing to recent advices, prices have considerably advanced. Prime samples of Coey's or Sinclair's hams are now worth Is 5d to IsGd; bacon, Is 3d to Is 4d. Colonial cheese, of which there is a good supply expected per Beautiful Star, we quote at from 9id to lOd. Sugars have not yet come up to tho advance in the Melbourne markets, and holders are not anxious to push sales. Victorian Company's 2nd white is worth 565, and stocks light. Good brown crystal, 50s to 525. Our impression is that prices must advance. Oilmen's stores of all kinds having lately advanced in Melbourne, a slight advance is noticeable here. Pickles are in demand at 14s 9d to 15s. Sardines at 8s and 10s 6d. Tainsh's jams, 10s Gd; Colonial jams, 9s 6d. Teas are plentiful, and prices have somewhat declined. The quotations are —qr-chests, 30s to 32s j half-chests £4 10s to £o 10s, according to- sample, and dull of sale. Currants are quoted at 6d; Cape raisins, at 7d; Muscatelles are scarce, and worth Is 4d. Candles firm ; Neva Company's are in demand at Is 2d; Brandon and other F. W. at Is Hd. Kerosene has also advanced lately, and is now selling freely at 3s 6d to 3s 9d. Ling fish scarce, nnd worth "d. Condensed milk 16s to 16s 6d. Bottled ale and stout not much in demand, but prices well maintained. Tennant's ale is quoted at 15s to 15s 6d; Blood's stout, 15s. Our stocks of brandies are light, especially Hennessy's in bulk. We notice a shipment of Ilennessy's, 18G5 vintage, to hand per Mary, for which the holders ask 9s 6d in bond. C.V.P., 8s 6d to 9s. Hennessy's case brandy scarce, and worth from 58s to 60s. Martell's do, 565. There is little or no alteration in
other goods. The meat market is at present very indif ferently supplied, owing to the non-arriral of vessels expected from Wanganui. Tiie amount of duty paid during the week on goods entered for home consumption has been £B6B lis lid, thus received Satday, £57 17s 2d; Monday, £l2B 8s lOd; Tuesday, £448 12s Id; Wednesday, £29 Is lOdj Thursday, £125 2s 2d ; Friday, £79 9s lOd.
