SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE.
WESTPOET. lIIUII WATER. This Day ... 6.53 a.m., 717 p.m. To-morrow 7.37 a.m., 8.1 p.m. Monday ... 8.22 a.m., 8.46 p.m. Since Sunday last there has not been a single incident connected with the shipping business of the port, with the exception of the fact of the steamer Bruce having proceeded to sen, and very soon afterwards returning to the river. On Thursday the sea on the bar had moderated, and the Bruce, which had arrived from Nelson on Sunday, steamed out, with the intention of proceeding to Greymouth and llokitika. She crossed the bar safely enough, but there was found to be a very heavy sea outside—such a sea as must make tho bars of the two southern ports very difficult to cross. She therefore returned to the river, and at present, though the barometer ia rising, there is no appearance of a cessation of the severe weather which has prevailed nearly all the week. The only other vessel in port is the brigantine Mary, which has been discharging cargo during the few favorable intervals in the bad weather prevailing. The steamer Charles Edward, which left Nelson on Monday, has not put in an appearance, and there is little probability of her having been able to round Farewell Spit. The other steamers have, no doubt, remained in Nelson, as no departures are chronicled. The southern ports have evidently been in a state of blockade for a week, as there have been neither arrivals nor departures. At llokitika, especially, access to the harbor must be altogether impossible, and it is likely, from the particular direction of the wind and its severity, that the entrance to the channel will be found shifted to the northward and by no means improved.
