THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH IN SYDNEY.
FALSE EEPORT OF HIS ASSASSINATION. GREAT EXCITEMENT IN MELBOURNE. (JBT ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (FROM OTJB OWIf COBBESPONDENT.) Dunediit, Wednesday. The s.s. Tararua has arrived from Melbourne. The Duke of Edinburgh arrived at Sydney on the 11th inst. Immense excitement was caused in Melbourne on the 16th instant by a false report of the Duke's assassination. The scoundrel who fabricated the story selected Sunday for the purpose of spreading the report, as on that day the telegraph offices were not open. The matter was alluded to in several of the pulpits, and produced great horror among the congregations and throughout the city generally. Small-pox is spreading. Several fresh cases have occurred in different parts of the colony, but all the patients are doing well. Some scandalous revelations as to the bribery of members have been made in connection with Jones's case. A Committee of investigation has been appointed. Jones has resigned his Commissionership of Railways, and his seat for Ballarat, seeking re-elec-tion. At the Berlin rush a nugget 761bs Weight has been unearthed. Flour £l3 to £l4 10s. SYDNEY. The Prince is enjoying himself privately, avoiding all public receptions) and walking unattended about the city. It is rumoured that the Earl of Belmore has sent home his resignation. Notice of a motion of want of confidence in the Ministry has been given by Mr Parkes, on the newspaper postage question. The kerosene works at Woollongong have exploded. The premises were totally destroyed, but fortunately no lives were lost.
