THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S VISIT.

"When the last mail left Melbourne, it waa understood that there would be no reception of H.R..H. the Duke of Edinburgh upon the occasion of his arrival in Victoria. He was to be met by his Excellency in his private carriage, and taken by him to Toorak. It was probable that there would be no special demonstration. Three balls, andsomeminor festivities, were contemplated, and telegrams were despatched to his .Royal Highness to learn his wishes on the subject. His Worship the Mayor proposed to give a grand ball in honor of his Royal Highuess'a arrival, and the Duke was to be asked to patronize similar gatherings on behalf of the Alfred Hospital and the Sailor's Home. The trustees of the Public Library had given permission for the use of that building for the purpose of the Mayor's ball. There is no alteration in the programme of the Galatea's voyage. From Sydney we learn that the Earl of Belmore had received a telegram from the Duke of Edinburgh, stating that he will arrive there on the 12th inst. This, by a singular coincidence, is the anniversary of the day when the outrage was committed on his Royal Highness at Clontarf. His returning on that day may be taken as the best evidence that he personally has every confidence in the loyalty of the colonists, notwithstanding the questionable taste of the New South Wales Parliament in discussing at the present moment whether or not O'Farrell was alone in his mad attempt on the life of his Royal Highness. By telegrams already published, the Duke is expected to arrive in "Wellington on the 28th instant. Wellington and Auckland are the only places mentioned in this colony in the programme of the voyage ; but there is every probability that his Royal Highness will visit Otago and Canterbury as well as Nelson. His stay must, however, be very limited, as he leaves Auckland for Yokohama at the end of May.
