EXTORTS. Per Kennedy, for Nelson—l ease vestas, rialler. The p.s. Charles Edward left Nelson at 4.30 p.m. on Thursday. Experienced strong westerly winds as far as Cape Farewell, ami moderate weather and calms for i' • re t of the passage, arriving hero at 3 p.m. ; ..aiurday. She brings a large cargo for this and southern ports, for which she sailed last evening. The steamer John Penn seems to have got quick despatch in the floating dock at Fori. Chalmers. She is already telegraphed as having arrived at Lyttelton on her way to the West Coast.
The steamer Bruce left Nelson on Wednesd it, but has not yet made her appearance at Westport. She bus probably put into Totaranui, heavy weather having been experienced along the coast. We understand that the JJruce is not to remain on the West Coast. She only proceeds to Hokitika, io remove a quantity of material belonging to tier owners. She is now under command of Captain Christian, formerly of the schooner Rifleman, and Mr Campbell continues as engineer. The steamer Beautiful Star, now under command of Captain Hipburn, formerly of the steamer Win. Miskin, arrived at Westport at 3 a.m. on Thursday. She left Dunedin at T p.m. on Friday, the 22nd ult., arrived at Ljttolton at 7 p.m. on Saturday; and remained there until Monday evening. She sailed at fi p.in., for Wellington, and arrived at Wellington at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, having encountered head winds and a heavy sea. On the arrival of the Uualiino at Wellington, with the Panama mails, the Star was chartered by the Government to carry the North Island and West Const mails, and was detained until midnight. Arrived at Nelson at half-past three next afternoon, after a rough passage through the Straits. Was detained there by a heavy south-easterly gale until Sunday iriorning. the same gale detaining the iiieebe and Wanganui for three days at Wellington. Arrived at Wanganui on Monday morning, and sailed on Tuesday at 3 o'clock.' TheKaahine gies to England from Wellington under steam, via the Straits of Magellan and iiio Janeiro, on the 27th of March. The Kaikoura and Rakaia sail homo.
During the month of January, 43 vessels •<tered in and 4 i chared out at" the port of Hokitika.
A new vessel, the Aborigine, under the command of Mr. J. Le Brun, late of the clipper Zephyr, is employed in the Hokitika trp.de. The Aborigine is a recent purchase of the owners of the Zephyr. News was lately reeeivd at Roekhnmpton of the wreck of the schcon t Jane Lockhart, on Bunker Group, outside Cape Caprieorn. The vessel was lost, but the master and crew managed to save their lives, and arrived at the Pilot Station, Keppel Bay, in a boat. The Jane Lockhart was bound "from Sydney to Broadsound, with a large cargo." The master of the Jane Lockhart was, we understand, Captain Machen, late of the Panaaia e-.d New Zealand Company's steamer Kaikoura. The schooner was insured, and at the time of her loss had a very large cargo on board.
A coincidence in connection with the recent voyage of the new iron clipper ship Tlieophahe is perhaps worthy of being recorded, hhe anchored in Hobsons Buy on Christmas Day, having left Liverpool on the 19th of October, 186 S. Seven years ajo, on the 20th of October, 1861, the s.s. Great Britain sailed from Liverpool, and arrived here on the day prior to Christmas Day. The Thcophane. l.owover. made the voyage from the- Erpvator in three days less than the Great Britain, and, ir.oreover, ihewas- becalmed in the tropics for fjur.days. Of course, the Great Britain's ; cissage was the shortest, but the results of the two voyages would sho.v that October is a favorable season for sailing from England.— Aryirs. —
