WELLINGTON.

(from our own correspondent.) January 18. On Friday next, the 22nd instant, the twenty-ninth anniversary of the settlement of the Province will take place. There will be various sports on the occasion, but the principal event of the day will be a regatta, for the prizes for which the committee have about £250 and two silver cups to distribute. The sports here on New Tear's Day were, as I have informed you, well attended. It had been previously announced that any surplus funds remaining in the committee's hands would be devoted to the relief of those on the East Coast of this island who are sufferers by the present rebellion. Accordingly the chairman has been able to hand to the Superintendent of Wellington and to the Superintendent of Hawke's Bay £3B each, to be devoted by those gentlemen as they think best for the purpose originally intended. The first sittings of the Divorce Court here was held a few days ago, but there was no business to be trans-

acted. Apparently the bliss of married couples here, if not -complete, is at least such that they do sot desire a change of state. The case of smuggling here has terminated by the schooners Kate and Euby being returned to their owners on the payment by them of the duty on the goods oi'iginally smugged. There has besides this been about £3OO in fines collected on the case. A station known as Huangarua, in the Wairarapa, containing about 20,000 acres, with 18,000, sheep has been purchased by the Hon. Mr Waterhouse, of Adelaide, for £21,000 cash. A company has been started here, in the Wairarapa district, by the station-holders of the locality, for the disposal of surplus stock. They, of course, will sell to the company, thus pocketing the cash without any risks. It will be a good affair for them if they can catch the flat to buy the shares.
