GREYMOUTH.
We learn from our Greymouth contemporary that a movement for establishing direct communication between Greymouth and the Greenstone diggings has heen taken up with spirit by a number of the most influential merchants. Shares to the amount of over LSOOO have already been subscribed for, and the Committee are to take the necessary steps for having the preliminary survey of the proposed line completed. Li the meantime the entire trade of a large mining centre in the Grey district is being diverted to Hokitika, instead of the supplies coming from Greymouth. As it is proposed to carry the line from Card's Lower Store, on the New River, to the Greenstone, the proprietors of the Eutherglen Tramway* in order to connect the lines, are about to commence the extension of theirs, and have called for tenders for the supply of the necessary material to enable them to carry on their tramway to Card's Lower Store. The Hokitika people are fully alive to the necessity of keeping the trade in their own hands, and have
originated a scheme for sending goods round to the Teremakau by steamer. The recent agitation will he remembered with respect to the purchnse of the Stoney Lead on the South Beach, ostensibly by Mr Button, of Hokitika, and the cancelling of the sale by the Waste Lands Board, under the powers supposed to be held by them to rescind sales of land within fifteen days after the purchase. Against this decisou the purchaser has appealed to the Supreme Court, and the case is being argued in Chambers, during the present sitting of the Court in Hokitika. Notices to this effect were some time ago served upon the men working on the lead. Considerable interest is taken in the case.
