THE CHARLESTON RACES.
(To the Editor of tlte Weslport Times.) Sir, —Having been one of the stewards of the late races at Fred Hall's, I wish to state a few words in vindication of the action taken by me, and leave the matter to a discriminating public, and abide their fiat if they imagine that I •was actuated by mercenary motives. "When first my name was placed as a subscriber, and being subsequently elected steward, it was with the intention of having one race open to all comers, so that our neighbors at Westport would compete with Charleston horses. I told Mr Seaton (who will substantiate my remark) on the morning prior to the races that such was the case, and accompanied him to the other two stewards, and they objected, imagining, doubtless, that the lion's share of the stakes would fall to them, and, being only one out of three stewards, they acted in unison, consequently any wish on my part was futile. Apologising for troubling you, I am, Sir, yours, Metrics: Jones. Butchers' Arms Hotel, Charleston, Jan. 15.
