(from our own correspondent.) Jan. 15. The Charleston Midsummer Eaces took place yesterday on the beach adjacent to the Eace Course Hotel, and proved a successful affair. The neat was very greau LurouguOUu the day ; nevertheless the races were well patronised by the fair sex, and also by a large number of miners and residents of Charleston and Westport. The band of the Casino performed some select pieces during the afternoon, in Hall's Gardens, which wei'e extensively resorted to between the races, the pleasant shade and coolness to be there secured making it a favorite retreat. The first event of the day was the race for the Trial Stakes, 1 mile, 10 guineas, weight for age. Post entries, 20s : Mr Forder's b.g., Skinny Bob ... .. 1 Mr Jones's b.h. Dusky 2 Mr Fcnton's b.c. Why Not 3 Mr Eusscll's Volunteer ... ... ... 0 Skinny Bob made very light work of it, and was a winner by nearly three' lengths. The second race was for the Publicans' Purse, of 5 sovs, 1 mile heats. Entrance 10s. Entrance money added. Mr Forder's b.h. Shillelah 1 Mr Jones's b.h. Dusky ... ... ... 2 Mr Allen's b.h. Sam ... ... ■■• o The third race was for Hall's Handicap. 15 guineas. The last race of the day was for the Consolation Stakes of £lO, for all horses beaten in any of the above events; enh-ance 20s; qualification 21s; mile heats, which resulted in Mr Loring's b.f. Charon being the easy winner of both heats. Between the races, a private trotting match took place, which afforded some amusement whilst the next race on the programme was being prepared, one of the riders being one of our respected citizens.
