At the Resident Magistrate's Court, yesterday, there was one civil case heard—the case of Meadows v. Woolfe; and another— JBulien v. Klein—was adjourned till Thursday week. In the first case the claim was for £4O alleged to be due for wages; but judgment was given for the defendant with costs. The second was a claim for damages by breach of agreement. On the application of Mr Pitt, who stated that his instructions had been miscarried, -the adjournment was granted, the defendant paying the day's expenses. Dr Giles intimates in another column the days upon which, and the hours at which, the Eesident Magistrate's and Warden's offices will be open during the Christmas holidays.

John Williams, who escaped from custody last week, after apprehension on a charge of stealing valuable property in Wanganui, has not yet been re-arrested. A correspondent who signs himself " J. T." puts to us the following question :—" Would .you havo the kindness to inform me what is i he value of the Ladies' Purse Eaee, and what is the distance to be run ?" Unless it be Mr John Crate, who is at present on a visit to this district, but who has not yet declared himself as a candidate, we know of no one who is likely to stand for election as a member of the Provincial Council. JBy some the propriety of returning any member at all -is very much questioned, it being their belief that the presence in the Nelson Council of a member for Wo9tport can do nothing for the interests of the district; but we do not imagine that that feeling will continue up to the day of nomination, and when the cessation of the holiday amusements will give the public time for the serious consideration of the question. The nomination takes place on the 9th proximo.
