NOTES FROM CHARLESTON.
Dec. 14th. The first meeting of the Young Men's Improvement Association was held in Mr Moore's school-room. The members present were Messrs Moore, Beveridge, M'Kenny, Price, and Day. Mr Moore was voted to the chair. The chairman in a few remarks opened the meeting, commenting on the praiseworthy obiect they had in view, and hoping that their labors would be crowned with success. Although begun on a small scale, he believed it would be the foundation of a noble institution. There were bylaws read by the chairman, and submitted to the members for approval, which after some discussion were put to the meeting and carried. It was there proposed by Mr Masters, and seconded by Mr Price, that officers be appointed on Tuesday next. Some conversation ensued regarding joining members, &c. Finally it was agreed to defer the subject. The great amount of zeal shown by those present bids fair for the future of the institution. Although a small beginning, it is commenced by earnest men, and by steady perseverance it is to be hoped the institution will flourish like the green bay tree, and be an advantage to society, and the district.
There is no news of importance at present. The miners are jogging along in their old style, making generally good wages, and, in many instances, small fortunes. The hotelkeepers on the beach propose to have a swimming match in the bay. If there is moderate weather a better place could not be got. Ido not hear whether there will be booths on the ground where the sports are to be held. All I can say is that if the committee intend to have booths, the sooner they are disposed of the better.
