News of a new and promising goldfield having been discovered in the province of Otago, about twenty mueg from Switzers, has been received by telegraph. Great excitement prevailed in Dunedin on receipt of the report.
The shop of Mr Waller, tobacconist, Wanganui, has been robbed. Amongst the stolen property—valued at £7o— a valuable gold watch and chain, about £l7 in cash, and a quantity of meerschaum pipes. The accommodation house of Mr Bennett, formerly of Wellington, situate at Ngaruwhakarou, in the Manawatu district, has been destroyed by fire. Mr Bennett has not caved anything but what he stood up in, and none of the inmates of the house saved anything. The loss is estimated at £SOO. The house was insured for £2OO.
