The fishing season may be said to have fairly set in][ and the river now abounds with herring and mullet. The Kiwi are now coming in and should be caught now, if fished for properly. At the Orawaite, and in the Buller, white-bait can he obtained in quantity, and some flounders have been caught in the former river within the last week. Our fishing; resources have never been realised yet, and it is surprising that more attention has not been paid to what might prove profitable engagement to many. Speaking of the present critical position of parties in the General Assembly, and the many difficulties which are closing in upon Mr Stafford, the " Examiner" says : —lt is tolerably certain a change of Ministry must speedily take place. Whether Mr Fox's resolutions are carried or lost by a majority of one, will scarcely hasten or retard the event. When in a House of Legislatue, constituted like the present House of Kepresentatives, Government possess only a bare majority, it cannot exist for any useful purpose, and the sooner it retires from office the better. Through the courtesy of Mr Gillen, purser of the John Pe.m, we are placed in possession of late Auckland fiiles. The Buller river is just now lower than it has been for a very long time, and the Lagoon Channel is almost dry yet there appears to be ample water on the bar, and no difficulty is experienced by the numerous steamers in entering or leaving the river. In this respect our port sustains favorable comparison with those to the southward. : As we were going to press this morning a hut down the tramway took fire, and was completely consumed. The night watchman, Mr Fagg was quickly on the spot, and succeeded in bringing a man from inside who was intoxicated.
