With English, European, and American Intelligence to April Bth. ♦— . The following appeared in our second edition of yesterday. The subjoined telegraphic despatch, is extracted from the Hokitika Mvening Star of last night (Tuesday). Eor this copy we are indebted to Mr Eoche, who was a passenger by the John Penn, and we beg to express our sincere thanks to that gentleman for his courtesy in placing it at our disposal. As will bo seen, at this crisis, the news is of the most encouraging and important nature.

The Ruahine, Beal, commander, left Panama on the -24 th ult., and arrived at Wellington at 12.30 to-day. Had fine weather during the voyage. The New York and San Francisco steamers had not arrived up to the time of her departure. The Homeward mails arrived at Panama on the 29th of March. The Tyne, with tho European mails on board, arrived at Colon on the 21st. Passenger list for Melbourne —Dr Husting & Son,Westgate ; Auckland— T. H. Hall, Sir G. Arney, Rev. Smales; Wellington—D. Time from Ship to Putney 21 minutes 20 seconds. No change in New Zealand securities. Accouchement of Princess of Wales expected on Ist June. Gladstone's bill for Abolition of church rates carried. Mr Ward Hunt appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer. Impeachment trial of President Johnson going on. Examination commenced on the 31st. General Butler made a long speech, ■exciting little sympathy. Steps taken to open a telegraphic line to Jamaica and Aspinwall, to be completed in six months. A new indictment has been found against Jefferson Davis. Treaty with North German Confederation taken up and passed in Executive session by Senate on the 26th, 29 to 8.

Treaty provides for free emigration, and that naturalisation changes nationality. Bill abolishing flogging in British army passed House of Commons. Serious disturbances have occurred at Toulouse and Grenoble, caused bv the enforcement of the new Army Act. Large bodies of men were marching about the streets, singing the Marseillaise and shouting ' viva la Bepublique, a bas la Empire.' Troops tried to clear the streets and were repulsed. Anti-Prussian riots have taken place an Bavaria. The Italian Government sent a ship of war into the Japanese waters to protect Italian trade. Spanish Cortes passed a bill granting indemnity to Great Britain for seizure of vessel Queen Victoria. *
