ARRIVAL OF THE STEAMSHIP ST. KILDA WITH TROOPS.

The appearance of the steamer St. Kilda in the roadstead on Saturday forenoon created quite a furore in town as it was known she had on board the much desired detachment of troops who were to not only maintain the Queen's supremacy and awe ously disposed here, but also relieve the citizens from the necessity of keeping that watch and ward which devolved upon them as special constables, but which could hardly be kept up excepting by a rainous sacrifise of money and time. Her arrival was therefore hailed with rapture; and although not a vessel of imposing appearance, she was invested by her mission with an interest that drew thousands of spectators to the beach and Gibson's Quay, when she crossed the bar on the evening's tide. Several gentlemen, including J'. A. Bonar, County Chairman, G. G. Fitzgerald, Esq., R, M., Inspector Broham of the Police, and others-, boarded her in the steamer Yarra, which had been engaged by the Government to take out Captain Turnbull, the pilot, and also for the performance of any other service that might be found necessary. The St. Kilda, however, got safely in and no sooner moored than the disembarkation of the troops commenced, and iu an incredibly short space of time was completed. The force she brings numbers seventy men. all told, and consists of three commissioned officers— Lieut-Colonel M,Donnell, Captain (Inspector) Cummins, and Sub-Inspector M'Donnell (brother to the Colonel) —and sixty-seven rank and file, including five sergeants.
