Messrs Hoyt and M'Kinnon have bought the Albion for £12,100. The Albion sails for the West Coast, thence to Sydney, and thence to Japan. A party from Dunedin go to Japan. March 12. Driver, Maclean and Co. sold Mr Rich's flock yesterday. There was a good attendance, and the prices realised were high. There were three thousand sheep sold. The first stud ram fetched £230, and was bought by Mr Wentworth. The others averaged £lO ; ram lambs, £3 10s ; ewe lambs, £2 12s Od. The total amount realised by the sale was £12,000. Wellington, March 11. After five days' trial the wharf action has closed without going to the jury. Messrs Kennard claimed for balance of contract £7OOO, extia? £7OOO, and damages £20,000, nominal. After the Government's case had closed, Messrs Kennard proposed a compromise, and eventually agreed to receive £SOOO as balance of contract, with no extras and no damages, and to abstain from further litigation : each side paying their own costs. Thursday. The Kennard wharf case has been the subject of a high bet. Kennard bet John Martin £SOO against £2OO. By result of trial, Martin has won his bet, and gets the money. Extracts. —The West Coast Times of Monday has the following ; —ln the Resident Magistrate's Court on Saturday, in the adjourned case of the Inspector of Nuisances versus John Hinchliffe, charged with allowing pigs to wander at large within the town boundry, his Worship fined the defendantSsaheadforeachpig (seven) andtisGd costs. In the civil cases, Hardcastle v. M'Girr and Louisson v. M'Gruire & Lynch, judgment was given in the former case for the defendant, for £1 13s, and in the latter for the plaintiff, for £2l and costs. We learn that a fracas took place in an hotel in Revell street, which is likely to be the subject of proceedings before the Magistrate's Court. A gentleman engaged in collecting names of claimants for insertion on the electoral roll, was violently assaulted on the ground of some presumed connection with this office. We refrain from saying more, as the whole facts of the case will be disclosed in evidence. The Governor has accepted the services of the first West land Rifles. The news was communicated by telegram on Saturday to Mr Bonar. A meeting will be held to-night at the Empire Hotel for the purpose of enrolling members, electing officers, and other important business,so thatwithin a week of this notice the first meeting, the "First Wcstland Rifles" will be an accomplishedfact. Such promptitude is highly commendable, and augers well for the future efficiency of the corps. Those gentleman who have signified their intention of joining the corps are reminded that the meeting is adAertised for eight o'clock sharp.
