A SUGGESTION.

(To the Editor of the Westport Times and Charleston An/us.) Sib, —Seeing from an advertisement in your paper that an election will soon take place for a member to represent the Nelson South-West Groldfields in the General Assembly, and knowing that questions of great importance will be brought before that body, not only as regard the mining interest, but the whole of New Zealand—such as the abolition of provincial institutions, the reduction of the gold duty, and the tariff generally— I would like my fellow miners to bestir themselves and join hand in hand and scud a gentleman that is bona fide connected with the mining prosperity of the goldfields—■one that we can trust our interests in /his hands, although he might not be so swell up in parliamentary dodgery or place-aoeking abilities. I believe we have men amongst our own class whom we could choose from, but the vital difficulty is, generally speaking, there are few men that I am aware of who can afford the time and expense necessary to be an independent member of the Assembly, therefore, Sir, if we as a body bring forward a gentleman of the right stamp, and pay him for his services by voluntary contributions, we should be conferring a benefit on ourselves.
