CHARLESTON NEWS.

A deputation from the Mining Board Committee, consisting of Mr D. G-. MacDonnell, Mr Savage, and Mr W. Davis, accompanied by Mr Carrol, took the opportunity of Mr J. V. Smith's being in Charleston to wait upon him on Friday evening for tliei purpose of securing his co-operation! in the work of getting a Mining Board establishment. After some remarks from Mr MacDonnell and Mr Davis, explanatory of the course which had been taken by the commiftee. Mr Smith inquired what would be the probable expense, and was told it would likely amount to about £4OO a-year. Mr Smith said he believed the want of i a Mining Board was generally felt by' miners, and he would co-operate with the other members to get one established, and would, furthermore, use his best endeavors in the next session of the Provincial Council to carry out the wishes of the pablic. After thanking Mr Smith for his courtesy, the deputation then withdrew. The usual weekly meeting of the Hospital took place on Friday evening, when the amounts for the last month, amounting to £lO3 6s Bd, were passed. According to Dr Bennett's report for last month, received, the number of patients in the hospital varied from 7 to 11. The secretary stated he had received from the Oddfellows' Society a cheque for £9 9s Od, being the net proceeds of their late ball. A vote of thauks to the society was unanimously passed. The secretary then stated ttiat he had received from the Commissioner a letter requiring that certain returns be furnished to the Government every month, and also returns showing the number of in and out patients during the financial year ending 31st March, 18G8, with the total and average number of days' treatment, the amount subscribed by the public and granted by the Government during the year, with an estimate of tbe amount of Government grant that will probably be required for the ensuing year. A meeting of the Mining Board Committee was held on Saturday evening, at which the following members were pre-

sent:—Messrs M'Donnell, Cameron, Savage, Connolly, Davis, and Kennedy. The following resolutions were adopted: —" That the secretary bo instructed to write to His Honor the Suprintendent, requesting him to withhold Ins sanction to any alterations in the mining laws, as promulgated by the Brighton conference, until a reply has been received to the memorial forwarded from Charleston containing the of 1040 miners and business people of Charleston and surrounding districts, praying for the establishment of a Central Mining-Board. 2. That the Secretary be instructed to communicate with the other Committees, acquainting them with the subject matter contained in the resolutions passed at this meeting. The Nathan Troupe finished their engagement with Messrs Foyn, Sturt and Co., on Saturday evening, with a pretty full house. When it was first known that so large a sum as £3i>o was to be paid to the Company alone, in addition to the ordinary and extraordinary expenses of the establishment, the general expressed opinion, was that the speculation would prove a loss, the result however, we are glad to say, is otherwise, and the spirited proprietors find themselves on the right side of the ledger, even if they do not reap any large profit by the transaction. The Nathan Troupe give them a free benefit on Monday night, and Little Marion takes her benefit on Wednesday. We believe also that a benefit in aid of the Hospital will be given by the Nathan Troupe previous to their departure, probably on Friday; Messrs Foyn, Sturt, and Co. having offered the free use of their room for the occasion.

It will be seen by a reference to our advertising- columns, that the wonderful little favorite, La, Petite Marion takes her benefit at the Theatre Eoyal, on Wednesday evening. The represen, tation of her greatest character, — " O'Callaghan on his Last Legs"—has been especially reserved for this occasion.
