NOT GENERALLY KNOWN.

To the 'Editor of tlie Westport Times and Charleston Argus. Sir, —In my usual rambles along the beach I have frequently observed a corrugated iron building about six feet square and well secured with a brass padlock; upon the side of the building is legibly written the name of "Thomas Field, dealer in guns, ammunition, &c, Kennedy-street." I have often wondered what could possibly be the contents of such a place in that locality, nobody ever seems to visit it so far as I can see or hear of, and it does not seem at all a place likely to be inhabited by either man or beast; I find upon enquiry that it is used by the above firm for the purpose of storing gunpowder, &c. Surely the authorities of "Westport cannot be cognisant of such a fact, it is in close proximity too, in fact in the midst of a populous neighbourhood; it stands almost at a right angle between the harbour master's residence and the hospital, and about equi-distant from both places. I have been in many towns in New Zealand and the Austra lian Colonies, and know of no place where it would be tolerated for a moment. I really think for the public safety that this fact should be made well known, and trust that you will use your influence in having this dangerous neighbour summarily removed. Tours, &c, Aegtts. "Westport, Bth February.
