Tho National Union bad formulated a programme demanding a truo Republic with a settled constitution, equitablo franchise, and the equality of tho Dutch and the British. Many prominent Nitlanders are' endeavouring to restrain tho Union leaders. President Kroger is quietly preparing to resist any trouble, and Maxim guns have been imported, whilo a quarter of s, million sterling has been expended on the forts at Pretoria and Johannesburg.
