WELLINGTON A. AND P. ASSOCIATION.
IMPORTANT PROPOSALS FOB THE NEXT SHOW.
£350 TO BE ALLOTTED IN SPECIAL PRIZES.
(From Our Om ComspondvitL y. Wklmxgion, The Committee of the Wellifeton A. and P. Association is determined to givetoitsannualexhibitionsallthe character and dignity of a metropolitan show, and with this end in view tlio Secretary, Mr Geo. H. Scales, hassubmitted a well-digested which will add immensely to the < - popularity of the show, as it is certain to attract the attention; of breeders, and tend to increase the numberof exhibits. The Secretary's proposals were discussed yesterday by a sub-committee of the Association appointed for the purpose, and consisting of Messrs Bidwill, H, • Beetham, Stuckey, Riddiford, A, ' Matthews, Elgar, Sladdon, A. Crawford and Majendie. The meeting was well attended, only a few of the members of the committee being absent.
Briefly stated the scheme involves a material alteration in the prize catalogue, and it is proposed to give to the winners of the greatest number of points in seven of the principal sections of cattle special prizes of £SO each. (Tfho addition to the prize catalogue would thus be £350, It is intended to charge a special entrance fee of £5 * for this competition, and in order that it may not press heavily on exhibitors, it is proposed to make the feo payable in three instalments as follows: £2 in March, £2 in Soptteinber, and £1 immediately before the Show. Exhibitors will not be expected to make their entries until tlio usual time, but in March they would merely signify their intention of competing for any one or more of the points prizes. Another proposed innovation is to include the "commended" exhibits in the points, that is to say that instead of adhering to the old system of allowing the first, second and third only to count, there will be added to the number "very highly commended," " highly commended " and " commended." Tlio sections to which it is proposed to allot the special prizes are:—ln cattle: Shorthorns, Jerseys, Herefords, and Ayrshires; in sheep: Lincolns, Romneys and KouthAtoM. Mr Scales stated that lie lmdrewi a large number of breeders and mentioned the project to them, and in every ease had received promises of support, The Committee practically adopted the whole scheme, but before anything definite was dono it was decided to obtain the feeling of all the principal breeders on the subject. _ This new scheme is business-like, and will certainly give the Wellington Show a higher claim to be called Metropolitan, The prize money is sufficiently substantial to engage the principal breeders and exhibitors and although the entrance fee appears large there is not the slightest chance of tlio fees covering the prize money. Wellington can boast that at its shows there is quality, but tlio number of exhibits falls below that of several other shows. A general meeting of the Association is to be held on the 23rd prox., when this new proposal and other mattors will be fully discussed. The ewe fair under the auspices jpfehe association is to be held on January, 1
