THE WAIPOUA RIVER.

| MR, DORRELL'S REPORT, The report of Mr John Dorrell, who was engaged to inspect the Waipoua river bank, and suggest a means of protecting tlio same from further encroachment was placed before the Masterton Borough Council last night as follows

in reference to the Waipoua liiver encroachment I bog to recommend that a breastwork be built six chains in length, consisting of No, 12 black wire netting, filled with willows, serub, boulders, and shingle, about two chains aboye the end of—l think—Bontleystreet. This will confine the river into one stream, and cause it to (low under the npnor bridqe. A slight overflow across the paddock above Deutloy-street cun be shut off by throwing up a small flood-bank at n very small cost. I understand the prevailing idea is to protect the bank from below Bentley-street round the bend to the lower bridge. I have no hesitation in saying that this will he a very costly experiment and will lead to trouble aud disappointment. If my suggestion is carried out I should consider it a favour to be allowed to point out the exact spot and give all details to the man in charge of the work. I think it hardly necessary to urgo immediate action, as it is very apparent that a little longer neglect will prove [disastrous to some of the dwellings in flic neighbourhood.—l am, etc., John Dobbkll,

Tlio Mayor said as far as he could learn, Mr Dorrell was a competont man. He thought tliero need bo no delay, and tboso who signified their intention of contributing, should be notified that tlio Council was now prepared logo on with tbo work.

Cr Chamberlain moved that the matter be left in the hands of tlio Works Committee, to give effect to. They could see thepersousinterestcd. Cr Horr.blow seconded the motion, which was carried.

Cr Foist said after consultation with Mr Daniell, he thought there would be no trouble abont raising the amount.

It was also resolved to ask the Park, Town Lands Trust, and Cemetery Trustees, to contribute towards the cost of the river protection.
