THE BOROUGH COUNCIL NOT SATISFIED.
At last night's meeting of the Masterlon Borougb Council, the following correspondence was received in reply to a letter from t-ho Town Clerk: To tho Town Clerk, Masterton, 4th Dec. 1895.
LICENSING EXPENSES. , lam in receipt of your letter of the 2nd inst„ asking:— Ist.—Do all the members of Committee whose names appear as having received payment of travelling expenses, reside more than three miles from the place of meeting. 2nd.—Have the amounts paid to the several members been the actual cost of the travelling expenses incurred by such members in attending a meeting of the Committee.
lp replv, I bee to state that I regret I am unable to give you information on these points, You willobservc that under paragraph (8.) of section 7 of "The Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Act, 1893," the Local Authority liable to pay the ex- ' pepsea of members of Licensing Com'4nmccs is required to do so "on the for the same certified by the Chairman and the Clerk of the Licensing Committee."

Gr Feist said, ho did not think, as the vouchers Lad been passed, that tLey could do anything but pass the account, at the same time pointing out that the Council did not consider somo of the items woro 1 strictly in accordance with the law. The amounts charged by tlio Pahiatua and Eketahuna members, were rather curious, too. The Mayor said it was more a , matter of principle, than the extra; pound or so. He thought they had. better pass the account, The motion, that, the account be] paid, was then passed,
