A correspondent informs us that lie has lately seen loiters from a shepherd amhmall run-holder iu Otago, fully confirming the accounts which appeared in the Witum, of tho losses amongst the llocks iu some of the districts of that province, caused by the severity of the winter. On one block where Mossrs lloss and Glcndiuning havo been accustomed to winter some of their hoggets, a flock of 12,000 has altogether perished and on another nriyate run of Mr DalBetty's, 011 which they have been in the habit of shearing from 25,000 to 29,000 sheep, they do not expect (o shear a single sheep. This is on flat laud, some 2000 feet abovo sea level. Soft snow lell to start with, then camo sharp frosts and then more snow on the top, tho consequence being that not a particlo of food was available for the sheep. Many cattle, too, have perished from the same cause, The full losses amongst the sheep cannot bo known until the shearing is over. There havo been some very heavy losses in Canterbury as well,
An assault of a serious naturo was committed on a man named James Christopher Mailman in Abel Smithstreet about 11 o'clock oil Saturday night, says the N,Z, T\mes, It appears that Mailman, who was the worse for liquor, was outside tho Victoria Hotel, when another man picked a quarrel with him, and eventually, it is alleged, struck him a heavy blow in tho face. Mailman fell to tho ground, and as ho appeared to havo received considerable injury, some of the by. standers took him to Dr Mackin's surgery. On examination Dr Mackin found that Mailman had received a wound on the back of the head, and that his nose was broken. The man, who was unconscious, was at once sont to tho Hospital, where ho did not recover consciousness until yesterday evening. When Mailman was picked up and was seen to bo bleeding profusely, liis supposed assailant 'disappeared. Tho matter was roported to Sergeant Shirley nt the Mount Cook Polico Station, and yesterday morning ho arrested a young man named William Stopheus, who lives with his parents in Broadway terrace, in connection with the affair. On enquiry at the Hospital last night wo wero informed that Mailman was not completely conscious and his condition is regarded as serious.
