MONTHLY MEETING. _ The ordinary meeting of the Council was held yesterday afternoon, Present-Councillors Yon Reden (Chairman), Maunsell, Handysido, Smith, Stuckey, Cockburn-Hood' Groves, and Guild. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meetin? were read and confirmed. LEAVE or ABSENCE, Correspondence was read from Mi fleetham asking leayo of absence.— Granted. MAIN ROAD, Discussion on tho EketahunaPahiatua road,as reported elsewhere took place. HORSE-POST. Permission was granted Mr P. D Pelling to erect n horse-post in fronl of his hotel at Eketahuna. barton's line. The Clerk was instructed to looli up and see what money was expended on this line, and report at next meet' ing. SURVEY. A. P. Rftweon, wrote notifying that he could not complete his survey at O'Connor's owing to obstruction, and thatlie had nowheon called out of the district. Ho also forwarded bin account, » Cr Maunsell said that although Mi O'Connor had no legal title to the land where the obstruction occurred he had promised to sell it. Resolved that Mr Rawson's account bepaid, THIRDS. Correspondence was read from tho Lands Department and Mr Kebbell with regard to the expenditure ol thirds on certain roads in the Alfredton district. It was decided to apply to the Surveyor-General with regard tc the legality of the road, and to allow the inattor to stand over till nexl meeting, for tho report of Cr Smith and the Engineer. S. Turkington wrote, applying t( havo his thirds paid to tho Pabiatw County Council. Also asking payment for bnshfelling on certain roac lines. Cr Smith moved that tho Engineoi '• report on tho bushfolling done bj Mr Turkington, with a viow to pay s ment boing made. Also, that thi il Commissioner of Crown Lands bi y informed that tho Council agrees t( ' pay over Mr Turkington's accruec 0 thirds to the Pahiatua Count,j Council, after paying for tho hush d felling done by Mr Turkington. " SAUNDERS 1 ROAD. With regard to Saunders' Road [, Cr Smith said that there was a pos g sibility of some Government assis , s tance boing obtained. The Financi . Committee had decided that thi small sum available from ordinary revenue was of no uso to repair thi road. AKITIO FERRV RESERVE. Messrs Handysido, Roberts nnt Co,, and the Commissioner of Crowi Lands, wrote re the vesting of tin " Akitio Ferry Reserve in the Countj Council. It was resolved to ask tho Govern ment to vest tho whole reserve in tin County, less tho road asked for bj 1 Messrs Handysido, Roberts and Co g VALUATION, n _ Mr Christiansen wrote complain ing of the County valuation of hi IB proporty. 11 It was resolved to inform Mi if Christiansen that no alteration coulc now bo made in the valuations. FORI ROAD. 1. Messrs E. McDonald and othei d settlers on the Pori Road wrote if applying for assistance for a bridgi i- on that road, 3. On the motion of Cr Smith, ii g was decided that tho matter be con 3, sidorod when further data is befon the Council with regard to tlx Government vote. THE EIETAHUNA ROAD, Tho Railway Department wroto, regretting that the Department's offer of £3O towards the damage on tho Ekotahuna Road, could not be increased, ] On the motion of the Chairman, tho offer was accepted. STRAY CATTLE. With regard to the stock yard at Te Nui, Cr Maunsell said he found it would require some repairs before being suitable for a public pound. 8 Ho had, however, received a telegram from Mrs withdrawing her offer to lot the stock yard, Ho thought-that some action must be taken to suppress tho nuisance of stray cattle, If tho matter was left ;, in his hands ho would see Mr Frod Groves, and roport to next meeting. This course was adopted, A REQUEST, Joseph Philpotts wrote stating he , had built a wharo on land which lie now understands belongs to the Council's road line at Tutaekara,and offering to pay rent. Tho Chairman said he did not think they could give any permisj sion or charge any rent. No permisson had been given to any ono to ' erect any building on the road. ' It was resolved to reply that the 1 Council had no power to lease any | portion of the road line, A LOAN QUESTION. The Colonial Secretary wrote regretting that the loan of £SO to build a foot-bridge on the Tiraumea could not be granted, only one ratepayer being interested and the Act stating that any proposed loan must ' bo approved by a meoting of" ratepayers." It was resolved toaskthe Colonial Secretary to reconsider the matter, and to ask Mr Hogg to assist. BOUNDARIES. On the motion of Cr Smith, the proposed alteration of boundaries at Akitio was approvod, the alteration to take place at the next Road Board elections. FINANCE. The Finance Committee's report, published by us some days ago was read and adopted. ENGINEER'S REPORT, The Engineer's report was read and adopted. Resolved that tenders be invited ' for Maungatakato Road works, as J soon as plftlte are ready, and that the Engineer, when next in Alfredton, obtain particularsre Eelibell's Rqad. " ' j
