By Telegraph—Own Correspondent, Pahiatua, Thursday. Great interest was taken in the mayoral election yesterday, and the candidates and their friends were hard at work all day. Tho polling was tho heaviest ever known here and excitement ran high. Tbo result was— Crcwo ~99 Vilo |lO Majority for Crewe 9. Bauds serenaded tho successful candidate in the evening and the crowd cheered him loudly, Tho result was a very popular one. Ataspecial meeting of the County Council held yesterday, Mr J. Griffith was elected Chairman for tho ensuing year unopposed, Mr G. Whitcombe declining nomination.
