WAIRARAPA NORTH COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tho regular monthly meoting of the above Council, which was to have beon held yesterday, lapsed for want of a quorum. The Engineer's report for the . month states" Tho contract for forming and metalling the deviation TP?on tho Bridge Creek portion of the To Ore Oro-Bideford Road was commenced by the contractors (Tobin itCo.) almost immediately aftei it was lot. Good progress has been made, about half the earthwork being already performed and a considerable quantity of the culvert timber is also on tho ground. MII,E POSTS.

The contract for supplying and fixing milo posts on the main roads in tho Masterton Riding, has been completed, and should supply a want, much felt by carriers, drovers, and v the travelling public. The Masterton Post Uliice is the datum from which all -measurements started; tho mileage on each line, as indicated on the posts, being continuous from that point, OI'AKI-MAXAWATC ROAII. • The metalling of tho 28 chains lying betweon the amended North boundary of this Riding, and the former boundary of the Riding, has been completed, and is now iu good OUfIL order. mii.vgai'AKkha koah, The preparation of the materials for repairing the metal on the Mungapakelia section of the Master-ton-Waimata Road, is still in progress, and will probably occupy another month to complete. It is proposed to let a metal-carting contract during (he ensuing month, on the western side of the swamp. Mr Mcßae's consent has been given to procure and cart the stone necessary, from tho Rowlands Estate, The deviations on this road, which wore opened for traflic about three weeks ago, are iu good order, with the exception of a few weak spots between Masterton and Te Nui. CASTI.KI'OIXT KOAH.

Particulars with respect to the allocation of the grants from the Castlepoint Road Board to the County main roads in this Riding, and the works recommended to be done on some of them, have been duly received from the Clerk to tho

Board. Expcnditureoftlieseamounts the balance of the County fund shortly be put in hand, and the recommendations given etfect to.

EKKTAHL'NA EMIIA.VKMEXT.

Contract No. 41 (Eketahnna Embankment) is completed, and the original lino of road has been restored to traffic some weeks since, The contractor having completed the work in a creditable manner. The condition of this road north of Eketahuna, which lias been a source of embarrassment to traffic throughout I the winter is now so dilapidated that vehicles are frequently bogged and the tine temporarily blocked. This condition of things is the outcome of tho evergrowing traffic and an altogether insufficient and decreasing maintenance fund. Through calls from other parts of the riding 011 its funds, the amount available for this length (largely in excess of its fair apportionment) is considerably less than in past years, while tho 7 or 8 miles of bad road is less capable of supplying the additional strain put upon it by icason of the increase in ' sawmilling industry and the augmented goods traffic from Palliatua. I would not advise the Council to spend more than the £ls which has been authorised for ameliorating tho condition of this road. Continued line weather is the cure for the existing trouble.

CASIU; HIM. IK'iAD,

The fencing contract is now completed, and repairs tothe road beyond Alpass'—necessitated through the washing out of an embankment to the hindrance of wool traffic-has been put in hand.

SIT. HAKEK IiOAII.

1 No advice is yet to hand with respect to the work on the Mt. Baker Road, but the draining connected with the duplicate culvert, crossing the Tawaitaia Swamp .should now bo finished. Contracts have been let on the Fori and Benton's Roads for clearing slips, and the works are now in progress The surveys of the Maugatakato and

Kaiwhata Valley Roads will be undertaken shortly, and contracts tfor proposed formation prepared as soon as possible.
