Bcetham, J, Jlonorieff; ' Finance Committee; W. Booth, J. G. Oates, C. J. Kcmble, G. \V. Deller, The Wairarapa Pastoral and , Agricultural Society's Seventeenth ; Annual Show began yesterday, and | was favoured with fine weather, i Towards the closo of the day, however, signs of rain began to appeal 1 , ; and a keen cold wind from the northeast blew over tho ground, As is usual on tirstdays thoattendancewas mostly confined to exhibitors and their assistants, but the attendance yesterday was hotter than 011 any . former occasion, consequent, no doubt, on tho Society having arranged a number of jumping and j trotting competitions, andthese wero an excellent broak to the monotonous routine of judging, to which the first day of a Show is set apart. The entries are again in excoss of last year, and show how the Socioty is forging ahead by the gradual and steady increase in the exhibits. Tho quality of tho exhibits this year—particularly in sheep—is superior to that of formor years. Exports pronounco tho Show gonorally to be the best all-round exhibition yet held by tho Society. Several further improvements liavo boon made since last year in the Society's excellent grounds, and as usual under the direction of such a well-tried and able Secretary as Mr E. W. Dorset has proved himself to be, everything is nrranged for tho utmost convenience of exhibitors, Judges and the public generally. Our old friend Mr W. Sellar, of Masterton, and Air MOll- - of Carterton, are in charge of the Secretary's office, and to thorn the Press representatives aro indebted for much assistance and information. Mr A. L. AVhyte, of Carterton, has a first-class luncheon booth on the ground; Mr J, Wickons, of Mastorton, is in charge of the Grandstand Refreshment Room, wlioro afternoon tea and light refreshments may be obtained, while Mr E. J. Searl, of Ekotahuna, conductstho publican's booth. 111 addition to the above, a special luncheon room, ably presided over by Mr G. W. Deller, is set apart for the J ndges and officers of the Society. It will thus bo seen that tho wants of the inner man are by 110 means neglectod. SHEEP. In the sheep class there aro 50 entries in Lincolns; 106 in ftomneys; 3G in fat sheep; 20 in Down sheep; 22 in Southdown; 14 in Leicester; and 5 in the Cotswold sections. Every entry is worthy of a place in any Show, and the sheep shown, as a whole, aro a substantial proof of tho slicep-broeding capabilities of the district, and also of the almost scientific standpoint which sheep-breeding, especially by studmasters, has now reached, Messrs Perry Eros, carried oil the championship in Lincoln rams, and a like honour was awarded to Mr J. Rayncr for bis Lincoln owe. The decision of the Judge in tho Romnoy class awarded the championship for rams to Mr A. Matthews, and for ■ ewes to Messrs Gray Bros, 111 the . Cotswold class tho entry was coni lined to Messrs Reynold Bros., and , the only Hampshiro Downs shown ! belonged to Mr J. Raynor. There i was keen competition between ■ Messrs Williams and Ueethain and Mr W. C. Buchanan in Southdowns, l a number of yery nice sheep being 1 exhibited. Mr Buchanan was tho ! only exhibitor in the freezing class, ! securing also two of the first prizes , for fat ewes and wethers in the 1 longwool or longwool-cross. Messrs Bidwill Bros, and Mr W. Booth 1 each secured a first prize in this [ latter class. ! O'ATTIiF,, 1 Mr A. Mcllardy, of Ilawkes' Bay, 1 took tho champion prize in Shorthorns, with his yearling hull, 1 Duke of Louglands,' thus repeating his victory of Palmerston North. Tho championship for the Shorthorn cow was again awarded to Mr A. Moody's ' Lady,' Mr D. McMaster 1 securing all tho other firsts for cows and heifers, Mr A. Elkins carriod 1 off the principal honours with his lino herd of Ayrsbires, annoxing gold medals for his bull ' Lord Onslow,' and cow ' lua.' In this class Mr E, Goodin's yearling bull 'Black-Prince' was awarded first prize. In Grade Shorthorns Mossrs Gray Bros, take a silyer medal for bulls, tho same honour being awarded to Messrs Williams and Bcetham for heifers. The principal competition in this class lay between Messrs Williams and Beetlmm, Mr W. C. Buchanan and Mr J. P. Russell, and the honors may bo said to be even. In the Jorsey orAldorney class there was next to 110 competition, Messrs P. C. Anderson find H. W. Clay being the only exhibitors, tho latter annexing tho coveted medals, otherwiso the honours wero divided. Herefords were confined to four entries, Mr ,1. Stuckoy receiving tho gold medal for bis yearling bull ' Bangle,* and Messrs Williams and Bcetham a similar award for cow calved sinco July Ist, 1892, HOUSES, Only three thoroughbreds were presented to the Judges who awarded the first honors and championship to Mr Buckeridge'e Egalite, Master Agnes second, and Administrator third, tho latter horso taking the first place for two years previous, Tho majority of the horses were not on the ground, and this class will bo dealt with more fully to-morrow. This year leaping and jumping competitions aro held 011 both days. Yesterday fifteen horses, well-known hunters, competed in tho leaping match, Mr Harold Welch winning after a closo contest with his roan gelding 1 Trro-up,' Mr H. Perry's ' Sunbeam' taking second prizo. Mr J. D. McDougall's 'Bobby' won the pony leaping contest from six competitors, In a walking match, for : stylo and pace, Dr W. Bey's wellknown bay gelding ' Huia' gained first honors, Mr E. W, Dorset's bay maro 1 Ethol' coming a close second. , Several other events concluded the , day, particulars of which appear in I prize list. IUTLICURMTS JtND IUCHINBRT.
